Despite three cups of coffee and a couple of large slabs of cake, Frankie’s brain isn’t showing any signs of brilliance. It doesn’t matter how many times she mutters ‘there must be a way’, there isn’t one forthcoming.

All it does is have the others glaring, her mantra not helping their own thoughts. At least according to Luca, this is. Nods from his fellow vamps, and even Sophie, confirms Frankie’s mumbling is a major distraction. Heck, even Dex is giving her the side eye.

She tries thinking of something else, anything else. Only then does a possible solution come to her. It’s them crowding around the small table, with the birdcage — or should that be batcage — in the middle that prompts her. The circle is a powerful thing in magic, possibly strong enough to overpower the infection.

The first thing she needs to do is work out is how to adapt her spell for getting rid of blood. “Be back in a second.” A wave of her wand sees her back in her cabin on the Pearl. She’s about to grab her E-reader and return to Sophies when she remembers to tell her dad and Nana Peg that she’s back.

Unlocking the door of her cabin, Frankie goes in search of them, finding them in the galley. That the walls, floor, every flat surface, and even them, are covered in flour tells of pancakes being on the menu.

Aware her mouth is open in horror, Frankie doesn’t try to hide her dismay.

“What in blue blazes is going on?”

It’s one of those questions, you ask when you know full well, but you’re having trouble believing it. “I’m going to leave, and if you two don’t have this cleaned up by the time I return, you are out of here!” She doesn’t wait to see what their reaction to her ultimatum is, waving her wand above her head, she leaves them to it.

She’s shaking her head in disbelieve when she arrives back in the cabin on Sophie’s launch. By comparison, the cabin is as neat as a pin. Bejinxed bunnies, even Stinky the hamster’s box of hay is tidier than the galley on the Pearl. Sure her dad ultimately saved her life; this doesn’t give him the right to trash her home.

Frankie can’t believe how angry this is making her, and it’s something that must show on her face. One by one the vampires get up from the table and move to the other side of the cabin. Sophie hangs out longer than the others, but eventually she has to move too.

Frankie covers her face with her hands, not wanting the others to see her internal battle. Eventually though she removes them, and flicks through the E-reader version of her mom’s big book of spells. Ah, here it is. The spell she used to get rid of the blood. There must be some way she can combine this with a healing spell. This way Zane’s blood could be purified rather than annihilated.
